2022 Goals Check in
Back in January I wrote my first set of goals for the year. Here is a good point to check to see how I am doing against these goals and to share with you all for accountability and transparency.
One thing I want to remind everyone about goals something that I have heard from many people but recently I heard this from my friend Justin which he has a substack which you can find here. He reminded me its not about how hard you work from an intensity perspective but it’s how often you show up (consistency) here is looking at you Justin. By being consistent is the most important thing in long term success as I have mentioned you are built off Choice, Behaviors, and Habits according to Darren Hardy your current state based is off of consistency a great deal. When I first published the first video on wheel of life I mentioned I would share more detail here is the review of progress. here is that wheel of life video
I had 6 overall areas to focus on : Financial, Mental, Physical ,Spiritual Life, Business, and Life Style.
Bold Areas are adjustments I am planning for.
So lets first talk about the areas I feel I am doing well in:
Life Style
Be mindful of work life balance — This has been much better since I started my new role its like night and day although according to my wife there are some bad habits creeping in like:
Responding to emails, texts, or calls after hours
Not responding to emails in the evenings.
b. Relationship building —while I feel on the friends and professional level I have done well I feel on my family side and some of the closest friends I could do better about reaching out.
c. Being more present daily I still struggle with but there is improvement here.
d. Planning my time and energy better — this one has been a huge win professionally in blocking parts of my days to produce work and focus on my top 3 for the day. I have to do better on the personal side especially with sleep.
Financial — This area I saw progress but in some areas I stalled a bit.
I have set up a centralized passwords system but I need to show my wife where it is and how it works. Our Will and other financial documents are in place to protect my family.
We also finalized on how to build a plan to help our kids with part of their college if they choose to attend.
Unfortunately on organizing partnership and corporation interests it was a bit of a challenge to find an attorney to help with this. In the short term I am planning to draft something ourselves in order to provide a measure of protection and guidance just in case.
Mental — This area I made a good bit of progress but more work to be done !
My framework for research and how I do my podcasts is getting better. I have spent a lot time researching this and refining the way this works best for me. In some cases a video tends to be longer so for some of these I have thought about breaking these up into multiple videos.
Organizing my second brain is a bit on hold but I do have areas I am dumping useful quotes, thoughts etc. I need to organize it more at some point. This tends to be a time consuming process.
Listening to Podcast or Audible has slowed down before January I was listening to Audible about 30 hours a month but now I am down around 10 but this is normal considering my focus has changed so I am good with this!
Turn Negative into positive — just today I was reminded of this that I need to do better lately I have been doing well but I need to do better so I challenge all of you that are doing well to keep up the effort !
I have one more area I want to add here is to not be so distracted to finish what I started. This happens a lot personally and professionally I am working to come up with a plan to address this in a future video!
Physical — Overall good progress here!
Badminton 2-3 times a week including training or badminton league .
Cross training I need to do a better job on flexibility, core and leg work.
Diet went a bit off track just more recently, need to clean it a bit. keto vs other stuff.
We are planning weekly meals which has helped with consistency. I think having healthy snacks always in the house will help with the clean up a bit too though.
I need to get better sleep and to go to bed at night consistently.
Business —
I don’t always write my daily goals but I do when I need to be truly focused on moving things forward. This is helpful for when I need.
I am involved in a couple outside projects including helping our HR to focus on internal mobility as I am prime person to talk about this considering I did it. I am helping with organization design, and a couple training classes around excel and storytelling with visuals in ppt. Finally my journey as a YouTuber has been successful and fun.
Spiritual life — this is the area I need the most work and I am struggling.
I really think having an accountability buddy or someone to read the Word with would be helpful.
With a baby on the one way and family hopefully coming to visit some of the items I specifically called out are new / adjustments while I have one more item to add but it would be in family which is to make a consistent habit to learn a little Chinese daily as my family will be visiting for China more to come on what these new habits might look like.
